I recently came across a new book titled “The Land of the Rising Sun and the Lion City,” which delves into the future prospects for cooperation between Japan, Southeast Asia, and the wider Indo-Pacific region. The book, edited by Singapore ambassador-at-large Tommy Koh and Japan ambassador to Singapore Hiroshi Ishikawa, explores various areas of collaboration, emphasizing the importance of peace and prosperity in the uncertain geopolitical landscape. It highlights the Japan-Singapore relationship and outlines policy pathways and recommendations for the future.

In terms of monetary policy, there are expectations for a September rate cut, but there are contrasting views on whether it is necessary. While some believe rate cuts could boost the stock market, others like Ed Yardeni of Yardeni Research argue that the economy may not require further stimulus. Positive indicators such as low layoffs, stable unemployment duration, and strong corporate cash flow are driving economic growth, raising concerns about the need for easier monetary policy.

On a different note, a family dispute has arisen over control of a club and a private equity firm following the passing of San Diego Padres owner Peter Seidler. The disagreement involves his widow seeking to sell the trust’s position in the management company, shedding light on the complexities that can arise in family financial disputes, particularly in cases involving significant assets and ownership stakes.

In the financial world, there have been notable acquisitions and liquidity events. One Equity Partners has agreed to purchase Bartec, Permira is considering a £2 billion takeover of British fund administrator JTC, and SGD Pharma is acquiring Alphial. Cube Highways Trust is preparing for a $600 million domestic IPO, while Chindata’s Chinese data center unit is attracting local bidder interest for a potential $4.2 billion sale.

In personnel news, Zev Garell is joining Barclays as head of EMA leveraged finance, Crystal McKellar has joined the DOD’s Defense Innovation Unit, and various M&A deals are in the works such as Altice exploring offers for its Israeli unit and Barclays selling its stake in Entercard Group. Desjardins Global Asset Management is set to acquire Guardian Capital Group, Mammoth Brands is reportedly in talks to acquire Coterie, and Poet is purchasing an ethanol plant in Tennessee for $190 million in cash.

Stay Well!
